“I take his point, up to a point, but I am annoyed by having to figure out what some people are saying. Literacy costs nothing and is the sign of good manners.”

“Er, think I get what you're saying...um...if this is bristol is the worst of the "this is" sites I might suggest its because most younguns aren't paying attention to this page. It's mostly old curtain twitchers and anonymous bigots looking for a bandstand. No suggestions why.

As for the dictionary police, I agree but frankly you're taking it to a new level.”

“I hated studying English language at school, as I always saw it as an opportunity to create a piece of art, while all my teacher saw, was an opportunity to hone my spelling and grammar.

I could have created the greatest story ever, and it would come back with red lines everywhere, with not a jot of support for my creativity.

The problem was, my handwriting was abysmal, my spelling atrocious and my use of grammar and punctuation a veritable shock to the senses.

The teacher, with limited time, had looked at this hideous mess and done his best to help teach me how to communicate properly, the creativity of my story was totally lost behind my own immature version of English, I might as well have copied out the highway code.

Basically, if you want to put your message across, don't hide it behind poor spelling and grammar and if your best efforts fall too far short of intelligible then get some help.

There are plenty of adult literacy courses and what you learn there will improve your quality of life immeasurably, never again will your opinion be ignored because it can't be understood.

I'm not having a dig at you Nimosee, it's just the way of the world. Only when you know the rules, can you set about bending them.

...and before the pedants get their red pens out, yes, my grammar and punctuation is still in the "must try harder" realm.”

    “@roly

Your modesty is commendable, and I think you write very well - barring the odd place where I reckon a full stop would do better than a comma, if I may make so bold.

Apart from, I agree with Blessing. Excellent post! I do hope Nimosee takes the trouble to read it and to digest its contents.”

“You openly admit to being a troll (something that would get you banned/pre-moderated on many other sites with active moderators) and seriously wonder why people are less than happy to read your comments? How about this - try NOT being a troll, make considered, tactful comments and you might get more favourable responses. Just a thought.”

“The replies to this discussion sum up so well the reasons that make the difference between a good comment and a bad comment on a bulletin board.

I can just about put up with poor grammar and spelling but when it is so bad that the gist of the comment is lost, then that is self defeating.”
