I will be a different captain to Langer, says Somerset CCC's Trescothick

Marcus Trescothick admits he will be a different type of Somerset CCC captain to Justin Langer – but will still demand the same level of commitment from his players.

The former England star is drawing up plans for his first season in charge at Taunton.

When Langer took charge in 2007 he was just the sort of hard-nosed individual Somerset required after a fallow period.

A promotion double followed and Somerset are now well-established as one of the best sides in the country, having challenged for the Championship title in the last two campaigns.

There is a school of thought that compares the Australian's input to that of Nasser Hussain's much-needed and aggressive brand of captaincy with England from 1999-2003.

Hussain pulled a rabble of a side into shape and set the platform for the more cerebral leadership of Michael Vaughan, who led England to Ashes glory in 2005, for the first time in 18 years.

Trescothick smiled at the comparison. He said: "When he (Langer) first joined the club it was off the back of poor results and he turned it around in conjunction with Andy (Hurry – coach) and Brian (Rose – director of cricket) – the structure of how we were going to design our cricket and the way we were going to perform to get things back on track.

"That came about through hard work, training, discipline and a better structure. I think that is the biggest thing he will leave behind.

"The players have realised that there is a lot of hard work that goes with playing the county season.

"It is a long old slog and to keep going all season you have to be mentally strong and physically fit.

"The training won't be any different. We all know from playing a certain amount of international cricket that you don't get easy results by having it easy off the pitch."

Trescothick will inevitably be more mellow than Langer, but will not offer his men an easy ride.

"I will be a different character by the way I go about things," he said. "I don't think I will be as demanding. I will be a bit more relaxed and a bit more poker-faced about what goes on.

"I won't be – I don't want to say emotional because Justin wore his heart on his sleeve – but I will be a bit more subdued at times."

And the England comparison? "I would love to think we could get to that point where we have that success because there will be an exciting few years ahead," he said. "That came around by having a good side and a good leader and it took off from the grounding the team had. I really do hope it does that because it will be brilliant for the team, the club and the supporters.

"That is up to me and the players and how hard we want to work to get things right."

Trescothick has skippered a first-class side 14 times, but only twice since 2005.

He doesn't think his approach will alter too much from his previous approach "I will continue to try to read the game as present," he said.

"I am not going to change too much.

"My own style will come through but it will take a little bit of learning and there will be situations when I will be out of my depth at times.

"I have a lot of knowledge of international cricket but as a captain you are learning all the time."

Somerset CCC hold their Annual General Meeting at the Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton tonight (7.30pm).
