The Bristol Post

I HAVE patiently waited for a comment of sorts to appear in The Post's letters' pages regarding "Girl 4 sent to live with pervert" (The Post January 10).

I have seen none, but the question still remains why did Children's Services at Bristol City Council decide to send a vulnerable four-year-old child to a foster home of a suspected paedophile?

A few days later our mayor George Ferguson was on Radio Bristol's phone in. All went reasonably well until the presenter asked Mr Ferguson my question which was "Some time ago social workers sent a vulnerable four year old to a foster home where a suspected pervert was living".

The mayor's reaction was unbelievable. he mad comments like "I'm not here to fan the flames of...." and "It was a mistake, don't all people make mistakes".

It ended there but once again it raised another question. Mr Ferguson is always talking about openness being brought into the workings of the council so if this was a "mistake", which is in some way understandable, why did the people responsible want to keep it a secret?

I have since learned that the police were ready and willing to remove the child but had to wait for permission from the council. So why the delay?

Thirty years of collecting evidence of "mistakes" made by children's services I was not surprised by the scandal that happened in my adopted city.
