1857: The oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC, were formed at a meeting of Cambridge University old boys.

1976: Britain's James Hunt won the Formula One world title by a point from Niki Lauda after finishing third in the Japanese Grand Prix. The Austrian had quit the race at Fuji in torrential rain, fearing a crash just 11 weeks after being badly burned in a race accident.

1987: Frank Bruno beat 37-year-old Joe Bugner in a British heavyweight boxing title fight at White Hart Lane.
