1889: Test cricket was played in South Africa for the first time. The host nation, led by O R Dunnell, hosted the England team, captained by C Aubrey Smith, in the first of two Tests at St George's Park, Port Elizabeth.
1938: The BBC televised their first athletics meeting when they covered the annual Oxford versus Cambridge match.
2000: Forty-one-year-old Neville Southall appeared in goal for Bradford after regular goalkeeper Matt Clarke fell down the stairs at home.
2003: Former Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy took charge of Premiership strugglers Sunderland, becoming the third manager of the Wearside club in a season that ended in relegation.
2006: South Africa and Australia both broke the world record one-day international score in the same cricket match. Batting first in the fifth one-day international in Johannesburg, Australia made 434-4, only to be beaten by their hosts' series-clinching 438-9.
