1907: The first TT race on the Isle of Man took place won by Charlie Collier on a Matchless travelling at an average speed of 38.2mph.

1980: Nottingham Forest won their second consecutive European Cup, beating Hamburg 1-0 in the final staged in Madrid.

1990: Maiden, skippered by Tracy Edwards with the first all-female crew, finished second in the Whitbread Round the World Race.
