1982: Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1 at Elche, Spain, to register the highest score in the final stages of the World Cup.

1996: England went top of their Euro 96 group after beating Scotland 2-0 at Wembley. Paul Gascoigne scored a spectacular clinching goal after Alan Shearer had put England ahead and David Seaman had saved a penalty from Scotland captain Gary McAllister.

2000: Tottenham agreed to sell French star David Ginola to Premiership rivals Aston Villa for £3million.

2004: Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy scored a late equaliser as Holland snatched a 1-1 draw against Germany in their Euro 2004 group match in Porto.

2006: Late goals from Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard gave England an unconvincing 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago.
