1872: England and Scotland played the first ever football international. The game at Hamilton Crescent, Glasgow, finished 0-0.

1955: Floodlights made their British international football debut in the last 15 minutes of England's match against Spain at Wembley.

1991: United States beat Norway 2-1 to win football's first women's World Cup, in China.

2003: England learned they would play France, Croatia and Switzerland in their group matches at the Euro 2004 football tournament. Come the finals, England were knocked out by hosts Portugal in the quarter-finals.

2004: Four-time Olympic gold medallist Matthew Pinsent announced his retirement from rowing three months after his final triumph in Athens in the coxless fours.

2008: Robert Karlsson and Henrik Stenson combined to produce a scintillating performance in the final-round foursomes and capture the Omega Mission Hills World Cup for Sweden.
