The new hard-stoned paths have attracted 12,000 cyclists a month, according to the council, covering half a million miles in total.

A keen cyclist and former architect, Mr Ferguson praised the design of the adventurous cycle tracks. He said: "I hear it's impossible to get bored of these routes, so varied is the mix of routes and obstacles. It's great to see this fantastic setting used for healthy enjoyable pursuits.
