Halloween vandals destroy Portishead flower displays

Tuesday, November 03, 2009, 07:00

Halloween vandals went on the rampage in Portishead – destroying a number of floral displays in the town.

Yobs ripped off three special planters attached to the bridge over Portbury Ditch on Wyndham Way on Saturday night.

The planters were put on the bridge this year especially for the town's entry into the prestigious Britain in Bloom awards.

Two of the planters, which were attached to the bridge with special brackets, were emptied on to the footpath and then thrown into the ditch.

The other was left with all its contents strewn across the walkway.

Portishead in Bloom volunteers discovered the damage on Sunday morning as they held a session to replant other tubs and planters in the town.

A team of around 20 volunteers spent the day emptying and refilling tubs in the High Street, Slade Road and at the piazza at Harbour Road.

The damage is expected to run into a couple of hundred pounds.

Anyone with information should contact Portishead police on 0845 4567000.
