Two men have pleaded not guilty to charges relating to an alleged terrorist plot in Bristol.

It is claimed Muslim convert Isa Ibrahim, 20, made an explosive substance and then hatched a plan to detonate it, Nottingham Crown Court was told.

Somalian student Hashi Omer, 19, is accused of failing to tell the authorities about Ibrahim's alleged plot, the court heard.

At a brief hearing on Tuesday, both entered not guilty pleas to the charges against them and now face trials later this year.

Appearing via video link from HMP Belmarsh, Ibrahim, of Comb Paddock, Southmead, faces two counts.

First, he is accused of making an explosive substance – namely hexamethylene triperoxide diamine – with intent.

Second, he is charged with the preparation of terrorism acts in April 2008 - that is, planning to detonate the substance.

That plot, it is claimed, included researching the manufacture of an explosive substance.

He allegedly bought materials to make it and detonate it. It is claimed he made the substance.

It is alleged that he carried out reconnaissance to identify a location at which to cause an explosion.

And prosecutors claim Ibrahim made an improvised "suicide vest" in which to place and then detonate an explosive substance.

After entering his pleas, the defendant was remanded in custody and faces a trial at Winchester Crown Court on June 3.

Omer, of Great Ann Street, St Judes, is accused of the failure between April 5 and April 18 last year to tell the authorities about Ibrahim's alleged terrorism plot.

He now faces a trial at Winchester Crown Court on September 2 after denying that charge.

He was granted bail on the conditions that he remains at a specified residence, gives up his passport and does not apply for new travel documents.
