Injury-hit Rovers are hammered by Oldland

Wednesday, September 16, 2009, 07:00

Gloucestershire Youth League

Wotton Rovers were on the receiving end of a trouncing as Oldland Abbotonians came away with an 11-1 victory.

The damage was largely inflicted by Sam Lee, Sam Winfield and Jed Kendall, who all scored hat-tricks, while Zak Zabek and Felix Haigh weighed in with the other goals. Max Minter notched Wotton's consolation.

Oldland raced into a 4-0 lead after just 15 minutes but that is only part of the story. Due to injuries, Wotton had started the match with three key players missing and the substitutes' bench included a number of fledgling performers from their Under-16s side.

Injuries during the game meant they finished the game with only nine players on the pitch.

There were no such problems for Winterbourne United, who pipped Gala Wilton 3-1, while in the FA Youth Cup Yate Town progressed to the next stage with a 2-1 win over Mangotsfield United and Almondsbury went down 2-1 at Bishop's Cleeve.

Yate visit Elmore in the next round while Cheltenham Saracens entertain Newport County and Forest Green Rovers host Clevedon Town.

Results: Winterbourne Utd 3 Gala Wilton 1, Wotton Rov 1 Oldland Abbots 11.

Fixtures – Sunday, September 20: Gala Wilton v Oldland Abbots, Longwell Green Spts v Yate Tn, Winterbourne Utd v Thornbury Tn, Wotton Rov v Cadbury Heath.

Wednesday, September 23: Almondsbury v Cheltenham Saracens.
