Congresbury site of proposed homes will first be subject to archaeological dig

An archaeological dig is taking place at the site of a former Congresbury pub ahead of a discussion on plans to develop it into houses and a shop.

Experts moved onto the site of the former Bell Inn at Kent Road this week to carry out an excavation on the grounds.

The dig was requested by the county archaeologist because Roman remains have previously been discovered in the Kent Road area.

Historic artefacts have already been unearthed at the nearby Cadbury Hill Fort, which is a designated scheduled ancient monument of national importance.

Three test plots are being dug at the site to check whether there are any interesting artefacts in the ground below.

The work is being carried out as part of proposals to turn the pub, more recently known as Cromwells, into affordable homes and a convenience store.

Developer Land and Buildings Ltd submitted an application in July to build 11 affordable homes and a 4,449 sq ft convenience store on the site.

The application sparked outcry among villagers, 200 of whom packed a public meeting in the summer to have their say on the proposals.

No details have yet been made public about who may run the store, but names such as Co-op, Tesco Express and Budgens have been mooted. It is understood the homes will be developed in partnership with a housing association.
