Longwell Green face their biggest test against league leaders

Friday, August 28, 2009, 07:00

Newly-promoted Longwell Green Sports' excellent start to the season faces its sternest test to date tomorrow when they take on Premier Division leaders Street.

Street leap-frogged the east Bristol outfit in the week to take over at the top, so the clash gives Longwell Green a great chance to regain top spot.

"Both teams are unbeaten, so there is everything to play for," said Longwell Green's general manager John Gibbs.

"I gather Street are also very well supported and bring quite a few fans on their travels, so we should hopefully get a decent turnout."

While Longwell Green are understandably cautious about their long-term prospects in the Premier Division, Gibbs said manager Julian Harmer's pre-season preparations had played a vital role in getting the side off to a flying start, with three straight wins.

"Julian had the lads training three times a week in the summer and I think that is one of the main reasons for our early success," added Gibbs.

The team picks itself for the moment, but Chris Churchill, Matt Always and Dan Tanner are pushing hard for selection.

Andy Black has had no luck yet on strengthening his side, so will look to his existing Bitton players to turn things around, starting with tomorrow's visit of Radstock.

"We lost against Bideford last week but we didn't play too badly, and there were signs that this young side is starting to settle down," said Black.

"I'm sure we can turn things around as it is still very early days in the new season."

Mark Cherry is away on holiday and Michael Mullan is doubtful with an ankle injury for the Radstock clash.

Having already thumped Bishop Sutton 6-3 in the first week of the season, Welton Rovers will have to be on their guard for the return fixture tomorrow.

"I'm sure they'll be looking to avenge that defeat, and they have had a few decent results recently," said Welton boss Mark Harrington.

"We just need to tighten up because, while we are scoring plenty of goals, we are also letting in too many."

Centre-back Nick Hudson is on holiday, so Tim Thompson returns to the side after illness.

Brislington manager Jeff Meacham is still waiting for his side to click after a poor start to the new campaign, as they host Wellington.

New signing James Crew will make his debut for Oldland Abbotonians away to Shepton Mallet in Division One tomorrow.

The Brislington winger agreed to join Spencer Thomas' side in the week and the Oldland boss is optimistic he will increase his team's firepower.

"I am really pleased to get James, as he will really strengthen our squad," said Thomas.

"He is an out-and-out winger and on a big pitch like Shepton Mallet I'll be looking for him to pump plenty of good balls into the box."

That will be welcome news to Oldland's prolific striker Matt Huxley, who has scored four goals in three games.

Thomas had also hoped to sign Cadbury Heath winger Keith Williams but he has opted to stay with the fellow Division One club.

No decision has yet been made on the outcome of the recent derby clash against Cadbury Heath, which Oldland were leading 1-0 when the game was abandoned due to a back injury to Heath striker Ryan Bernard.

Keynsham Town boss Steve Cains will give a debut to Seb Spiller, who has switched from Oldland Abbotonians, against Bradford Town .

Clevedon United include new signing Sam Parks in their squad for the match at Chard.
