Vandals hit Clevedon Pride work

Wednesday, October 28, 2009, 07:00

Hooligans have tipped over new planters installed in Clevedon town centre.

Action group Clevedon Pride had installed planters in Queens Square. But on Sunday hooligans tipped over two of the planters, recently filled with winter flowers.

It is understood the damage may have been done by a gang of rowdy youths on their way home for a night out.

The wreckage was discovered by traders arriving at work on Monday morning and the planters have now been reinstated and refilled with flowers.

Clevedon Pride launched 18 months ago to revive and regenerate Clevedon Town Centre.

Clevedon Pride chairman, Howard Coggins, said: "We are disappointed that this has happened.

"Fortunately, one of our members was able to reinstate the planters quickly.

"Incidents such as these will not deter the group from continuing with its work to improve and regenerate Clevedon town centre."

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Clevedon police on 0845 4567000.

Clevedon
Clevedon was mentioned in the Domesday Book as being a holding of a tenant in chief by the name of Mathew of Mortaigne and was listed at that time as having eight villagers and ten smallholders.
During the Victorian era Clevedon became a popular seaside town. The Victorian craze for bathing in the sea was catered for in the late 19th century by saltwater baths adjacent to Clevedon Pier (the foundations can still be seen), and bathing machines on the main beach.
At the dawn of the twentieth century Clevedon was still a popular resort and the Curzon cinema was built, which is the oldest purpose-built, continuously operated cinema in the world.
