Who knows how important seasonal points will be for Bristol City?
I have to say that I wasn't expecting Bristol City to pick up anything more than a draw at Vicarage Road – so to win and score four goals was a massive boost.
The team were far more attacking than they have been, were a threat from out wide and caused Watford problems all afternoon.
Nicky Maynard scored two goals and had one disallowed against Watford. His winner against Palace yesterday means that he has now scored eight goals (including four in the last three games) and is only one short of the number scored by the club's top scorer last season. I am sure he will prove to be a very good buy and just needs the service in the penalty area.
Stern John was a decent foil for Maynard but I'm still not convinced he is worth the money and I would like to see another striker brought in during the transfer window. Ivan Sproule also put in a good performance against Watford and on this form he could be a regular fixture in the side. I have been critical of Sproule's performances and still feel he has to improve his final ball, but I like his attitude. If he can improve on his quality and finishing then he can play a huge part in the rest of the season.
The midfield of Marvin Elliott, Michael McIndoe and Lee Johnson worked hard with Elliott scoring and Macca and Lee providing assists for two of the goals.
I would like to congratulate Louis Carey on his recent marriage and, following his recall to the side after his ban, he had only one or two nervous moments alongside Liam Fontaine.
Bradley Orr was again solid and was arguably the best defender on the pitch. It would be nice to think that his contract dispute could be resolved as he has shown a thoroughly professional attitude since being recalled and shown his worth to the side.
Next up for City is an intriguing trip to Portsmouth in the FA Cup. Pompey's manager Tony Adams is coming under increasing pressure to get results and, despite being backed by his former mentor Arsene Wenger, he won't be given the luxury of too much time to turn things around.
With the transfer window opening and Portsmouth reported to be in financial difficulties there is the possibility that more star performers will leave Fratton Park before City's visit. City should enter the tie with confidence high, so there is every chance they can take something from the game. Happy New Year to all City fans and fans of other clubs and let's hope for a successful second half of the season.
