All at Bristol City have work to do this summer
That applies to the club scouts, the management and coaching staff, the players and the fans.
The scouting network needs to work really hard over the next few weeks and unearth signings in the mould of Marvin Elliott and not in the mould of Stern John or Peter Styvar. I'm not being unkind to either player but neither in my opinion did anything to improve the squad and the money could have been better spent.
The management team has to improve the quality within the squad over the summer and, as I have said before, I expect there to be a number of comings and goings over the next few weeks.
It looks like Dele Adebola will be off and that has caused a bone of contention amongst fans. What is the difference in Dele's situation to that of Bradley Orr earlier in the season? Bradley was holding out for a better contract and as he refused to sign was dropped from the squad.
Dele has refused at the moment to sign a new contract and is still being included in the squad and played against Burnley. Gary, we can't have double standards and what applies to one should apply to the other.
The players who remain also have to improve next year. A number need to take a look at themselves and understand what is required to move to the next level. I expect players like John Akinde and Frankie Artus to be pushing hard for a place in the first team squad and the same must be said of Lee Trundle. It will be all too easy for Lee to sit in the reserves and on the fringes of the first-team, for the last year in what is undoubtedly a nice contract.
Lee is a quality footballer but needs to work hard throughout the summer and hit the ground running in August. We have to improve the quality of service that the strikers receive and I would expect Ivan Sproule and Michael McIndoe to work hard on their delivery into the box.
As fans we have to accept what it is the cub is trying to achieve and not expect over night success.
The Championship is a difficult division to stay in let alone get out of, and with teams like West Brom, Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Hull likely to be dropping into it next year, it will be even tougher.
I would expect us to be challenging for a play-off place again next season but I'm realistic to know that survival has to be the first priority.
That's not being negative and survival will be achieved while pushing for promotion. Have a good summer.
