Bristol City fan's view by Matt Withers: Johnson's changes worked a treat
And now, I'm writing about six goals and six points.
Tuesday's night's game against Plymouth was a strange affair. I was pleased to see Gary make a number of changes, looking to get the ball wide by deploying Danny Haynes on the right, opting to rest Lee Johnson and Marvin Elliott. Before kick off, there was a classic demonstration in public relations from Gary Johnson. Gary and his team had come in for some stinging criticism after the dropped points at home to Peterborough.
Gary, his coaching staff and entire squad, gathered in the centre of the pitch and applauded all four sides of the ground. Gary wanted to show his players that the vast majority of the crowd were behind them and that the players appreciated the support. Funnily enough, the changes didn't really work and City struggled to get a foothold in the game.
Like Peterborough in the previous game, Plymouth's play belied their position near the foot of the table. The game seemed to be heading for a goal-less draw until Gary made further changes, bringing on Gavin Williams and Ivan Sproule. Four goals in six minutes followed.
So on to a trip Oop North and a fixture against a somewhat rejuvenated Barnsley, following the recent appointment of new manager Mark Robins. Gary shuffled his pack again and recalled Lee Johnson and Marvin Elliott, resting Paul Hartley and Cole Skuse. Louis Carey was also recalled with Alvaro Saborio moving to the bench. It was maybe a surprise that Gavin Williams had not retained his place but once again the 'Gaffer' showed he knows what his doing.
Following a strong performance, City got their first away win of the season with goals from Nicky Maynard, Evander Sno and Marvin Elliott. Nicky Maynard is a striker and form and bagged his ninth of the season. Nicky looks like he is going to score every time he steps on to the pitch and is a different player to the one we saw for a lot of last season.
Haynes was once again impressive, as was Skuse who is really developing into a quality player and is a very important member of the team. There was a personal howler from stopper Dean Gerken. Deano, has been in outstanding form this season and can be forgiven for this 'You've Been Framed' moment.
