A spanish tradition will be imported into South Glouces- tershire to mark St George's Day.

Roses will be given away to the first 50 readers in the district's libraries on Thursday (April 23) in recognition of the patron saint of England.

St George is also the patron saint of Catalonia and the idea has come from its capital, Barcelona, where people exchange books and roses on April 23.

The event will also involve libraries asking users to recommend books they have enjoyed.

Some 3,000 council staff will exchange books. Some primary schools will also be getting involved and it is hoped companies will, too.

Anyone who wants to join in can pick up a card from any library in the district between now and May 3 and use it to make recommendations.
