Bristol bus changes 'ridiculous'
Service changes being made by First will leave people based at Abbey Wood and Aztec West with no bus service to work.
The bus operator has announced plans to make alterations to a variety of services in north Bristol and South Gloucestershire, including to the 73, 73A and 73B.
-

The buses run from the city centre to Cribbs Causeway, through Bishopston, Filton and Bradley Stoke.
But from Sunday, February 1, they will no longer call at Aztec West, the Ministry of Defence offices at Abbey Wood, nor at Filton High School.
First says that the changes aim to improve punctuality on the routes, where traffic is unpredictable during rush hours.
The company also claimed that an average of one passenger per journey uses the service to Abbey Wood and Aztec West each day.
But it was not the view of Richard Piper, a 42-year-old IT worker at Abbey Wood who lives in Huckley Way, Bradley Stoke.
He said that the commuter service was well used and that First was placing profits above the concerns of bus passengers.
Mr Piper sometimes catches the 73 to work, which usually takes about 30 minutes after a 25-minute walk to his nearest bus stop.
The 73 currently stops outside the MoD building but from February 1 it will stop at the Filton Road roundabout.
Mr Piper said that would add a 10-minute walk to his journey to work.
"It's ridiculous that First can be allowed to get away with this to simply get even more profits out of it passengers," he said.
"It's even more ridiculous when you realise that I can walk to work in about 45 minutes and get there by bike in 15 minutes.
"I usually catch the bus if it's raining but with these changes it's now going to take over an hour to get to work by bus."

“First off congratulations to Pete from Chippenham for his comment somebody with a brain at last. To everyone else if they had the correct tickets, passes correct fare and spent less time whinging about the bus being late, the bus could leave the stops on time, and try to keep to the actual running times. Try doing the job,and as for our poor friend from Bradley Stoke who has to walk an extra 10mins think of your carbon footprint...”

“I used the bus for a year, it was such a rubbish service, In the end the end I forced my self to have driving lessons! I live in brislington and work at aztec west, it used to take 2 1/2 hours each way, on 2 different busses, one evening it took me 4 hours to get home!! I nearly lost my job as I was always late. The bus would not even turn up, and sometimes you stick your hand out and it goes str8 past. One morning I was on the bus stop at 6am, the bus didnt turn up, the next bus arrived and told me he had driven past the 1st bus and the driver was asleep, parked up! Wrote a letter to make a complaint to 1st bus as I was late for work yet again, they admitted they driver was asleep and sent me a free day ticket!! I will never step foot on another bus in bristol while 1st busy are running the service.”

“I think it is a bit unfair to simply blame First. The traffic congestion in the Abbey Wood area is completely random. Also Abbey Wood was not built with due consideration for bus services as it is located up a dead end spur road. Every number 73 has to drive up this road and then come back. This will take about 1 to 2 minutes during the day, but at the morning and evening peak it can take up to 30 minutes, nowadays this occurs once or twice a week. How can First shedule for such random congestion. First are answerable to the Traffic Commissioners. All bus operators in England and Wales must register those services they wish to run commercially with the Traffic Commssioners. The Traffic Commssioners state that bus operators must run their services so that over 90% arrive at timing points (the ones listed in timetables) at not more than 1 minute early or 5 minutes late. Routine monitoring is carried out to ensure compliance, and hefty fines await those who don't comply. This is why First have chopped the Abbey Wood stop from the 73. South Gloucestershire council are also at fault for failing to provide adequate bus priority lanes in the area. Their planning policies created a North Bristol fringe of low density suburban sprawl with out of town business parks, the sort of environment taht only really suites private cars.”
