An elderly man was seriously injured after he stepped out into the path of a First bus in Old Market
The force of the impact cracked the windscreen of the bus and police said the man had multiple injuries, which were considered to be life-threatening.
The eastbound carriageway was shut to all traffic for more than two hours after the incident, which happened at about 2.15pm yesterday.
The injured man was taken by ambulance to the Bristol Royal Infirmary.
Liam Oxenham, 18, from Downend, was on the bus when the accident happened. He told the Evening Post: “I heard an alarming thud when he collided with the bus.
“There were two other bus drivers on the bus on their way to work and they came forward to help the driver, telling him not to touch anything and to stop the bus so it didn’t move any further.”
Mr Oxenham, who was on his way back from the first day of an apprenticeship in carpentry, described the pedestrian as in his 80s, wearing beige khaki trousers and white trainers.
Traffic immediately backed up as drivers slowed to see what had happened.

“I can't believe some of these comments! What's wrong with telling people to slow down and be more courteous?? When did being a decent human being become such an issue??Nearly everybody speeds (including buses). It's seems that people are in too much of a hurry these days to follow simple rules, and actually care about others. It's very sad. I hope the chap gets better.”

“Shut up Ron, you simplistic, obviously cycling idiot. If someone steps out in front of your vehicle,
I would just like to point out that even cyclists can kill pedestrians if they hit them hard enough. I've managed to hit 45mph on my bike, and the fastest speed clocked by a tour de france cyclist is 71.9mph.”

“Maybe cars should slow down but a blanket reduction to 20mph?
Not talking about this old feller who i hope recovers but maybe some pedestrians should realise that pedestrian crossings were put there for a reason - its not like there is a shortage of crossings in Central Bristol (and also that a mobile phone is not a clocking device).”
