We have teamed up with Bristol Zoo to give you a chance to watch their amazing gorillas – at the click of a mouse.

We have launched a new Bristol Zoo page which features two live feeds showing the gorillas day and night.

The zoo has cameras – one out on Gorilla Island and one inside the gorilla house – which are streaming live views of the family of six gorillas: Jock, the 220kg adult male, Salome and Romina, the two adult females, four-year-olds Kera and Namoki, and little Komale, who is two.

The outdoor camera, located high on the side of the gorilla house, overlooks Gorilla Island and has a 180-degree view, covering almost the whole island.

The second camera is located inside the Gorilla House, where you can watch the gorillas resting, eating or playing together.

The best times to tune in to the webcam are when the gorillas are eating their breakfast at about 9am and at the 12.30pm gorilla talk and feeding time – when the weather is fine.

John Partridge, Bristol Zoo's senior curator of animals, said: "We're very excited about this new project. The gorilla webcam is a first for us and we are thrilled to be able to offer this extra treat to the public."

He added: "It's great for the public to be able to watch these fascinating animals on the webcam anytime during the day as they are so fantastic to watch.

"But you really can't beat seeing the gorillas up close in their full glory. We hope the webcam will encourage people to come along to the zoo to meet our gorilla family and to find out more about them and the threats facing their relatives in the wild."

The gorilla webcam has been developed and installed by the zoo in conjunction with webcam specialists, Finetra.

Bristol Zoo is holding its first Ape and Cake event to celebrate the 26th birthday of the zoo's resident silverback gorilla, Jock.

The after-hours event, on Sunday, May 31, is an opportunity to enjoy tea and cake by Gorilla Island. Visitors will have the chance to meet the keepers, ask questions and hear exclusive insights into the gorilla family. The six gorillas will also be given a special birthday cake as a treat for the occasion.

The event is a fundraiser for Bristol Zoo's 2009 Year of the Gorilla campaign, which aims to raise funds and awareness to help the survival of these critically endangered animals through the zoo's work here and in Cameroon.

The event will take place from 5.30pm-7pm. Tickets cost £15 each. Booking is essential. Contact 0117 974 7300.
