Wood has solid day in quest for a card
The 20-year-old cruised to a bogey-free five-under-par score in his second round at the Qualifying School Final Stage tournament, which moved him from tied 82nd to tied 17th.
Wood opened with a birdie to go under par for the first time and never looked in any trouble on the easier of the two courses hosting the event at Girona.
He said: "It was nice to start with a birdie. I hit a good shot in and that hole set me up for the day.
"All my five birdies were tap-ins and it shows that my long game is fine. There is still lots of improvement to be made with my putting, but I'm in a good position even though I haven't played my best golf yet."
The Open Championship silver medal winner needs to finish in the top 30 in the six-round marathon tournament to win a Tour card that will give him exemption to almost all the events on the European Tour in 2009.
He is currently two shots inside the mark – 30th position is three-under after two rounds – and will need to maintain his form to hold on to his position.
Wood added yesterday: "I had good practice and got a bit of a better feeling in my swing. Because I had an early start time, I have a bit more time tonight which will be useful."
However, Wood is aware that the Green and Red Courses at Catalunya are throwing up very contrasting scores.
On day one, ex-Tour champion Darren Fichardt of South Africa was seven over par after playing the Green, yet he shot seven under on the Red yesterday.
"You need to score on the Red Course and hold on to your score when you play the Green. We're on target for that," said Wood.
Sweden's Oscar Henningsson is eleven under par and has a three-shot lead after 36 holes.
It is expected that Wood and his rivals will need to reach at least 10 under par to win Tour cards.
