Welsh aims to get amongst the goals at Yeovil Town
The former Sunderland wide man took time to find match-fitness and form after missing pre-season when he was without a club.
But now Welsh is a regular in the Glovers' side on the left flank and his set pieces have become a key component of Yeovil's attacking play.
But he is yet to score in any of his 27 appearances in the green and white.
"As goalscorers you are judged on how many goals you score and as wide men you are judged on how many you create," he said.
"I have got to look forward to Saturday and try to get myself an assist and a goal.
"I do feel I need to start getting a bit closer on the goal count.
"I have had a few chances cleared off the line but I need to get my fair share."
Welsh has the perfect target to aim for with his free kicks and corners – giant centre half Aaron Brown.
"After the first couple he scored people are a bit wary of him," said Welsh.
"For me I have just got to hit the area Browny is in and hopefully the keeper will be hesitant and not touch it and even if Browny doesn't head it, it might drop to one of the other lads like it did at Peterborough when Warnie (Paul Warne) scored."
Like the rest of the squad, Welsh has had to readjust to life with team-mates Terry Skiverton and Nathan Jones as manager and assistant boss.
"It has been a bit strange because the gaffer and Jonesy were two big characters in the dressing room," he said.
"Now we have got to give them the respect and work twice as hard to get the results so they stay in the job and we stay in the job."
Skiverton and Jones go into their third game in charge at Walsall today looking for a first win.
"With the games coming thick and fast we haven't had time to bed in," said Welsh.
"We have still got a lot of Saturday-Tuesdays coming up so we just have to learn as we go along.
"Not having a (free) week to get used to it has been difficult and they have only been in the job a week.
"It has been hard but the main thing is going out and getting results."
Skiverton has changed Yeovil's style of play to a more footballing approach, which Welsh welcomes.
"The last two games people have seen a bit more of me higher up the pitch, getting at my man," he said.
"I think that is probably because we have got the ball down a lot more and played.
"Even though we have done that the gaffer will say there is times when we need to drop it in behind and not keep it as much because sometimes you can keep the ball all day and not really go anywhere. You have got to get the right contrast."
Skiverton has named the same side for both his games so far but has also told Yeovil's handful of fringe players that they may soon be needed.
"The season can start to take its toll on some people but we have got players who can come into the side so if you are out the side at the minute you will get a chance," said Welsh.
Yeovil's away record (21 points) is still more impressive than their home form (16).
"It feels like we haven't played at home in the last few months," joked Welsh.
"We have been away a lot and we have got a lot of home games coming up so that will be a good test for us.
"We have picked up a lot of points away and that shows we are a good, solid team away from home.
"Although we got beaten at Crewe the other night hopefully that is a blip and we will set it right."
