Truro City clinch championship with win over Taunton Town

Tuesday, April 14, 2009, 07:00

Taunton Town 1 Truro City 3: Truro clinched the BGB Southern League Division One South and West championship, continuing their rapid rise up the football ladder.

But for Taunton it meant another nail in their coffin as they dropped back into the relegation zone on goal difference.

The Cornish side played Taunton off the park in the opening half hour, racing into a 3-0 lead through Stewart Yetton (seven and 13 minutes) and Graeme Power (29) before taking their foot off the throttle.

Taunton took full advantage to pull a goal back from the penalty spot in the 44th minute through Twaine Plummer – and then missed a couple of good chances early in the second half as efforts from Shaun Anthony and Scott Thomas went wide.

But classy Truro, who lost goalkeeper Martin Rice with a dislocated finger after an hour, always looked the better side and should have won by a bigger margin.
