Schofield's double a relief for Glovers

Tuesday, October 21, 2008, 22:57

A brilliant brace from winger Danny Schofield and Darren Way's first goal of the campaign gave Yeovil Town a badly-needed first home win since March.

Former Huddersfield man Schofield's efforts on 45 and 66 minutes looked certain to give the Glovers a victory but a double substitution from Crewe sparked two goals in four minutes from Byron Moore and Shaun Miller.

Another replacement, Gavin Tomlin, fashioned the winner for the hosts when he crossed from the right and midfielder Way's low shot took a deflection and then crept in off the post.

Results elsewhere ensured the Glovers stayed in the League One drop zone, but three points have given them great heart for Saturday's equally important clash with Leyton Orient.

Schofield's double means the former Huddersfield man is now Yeovil's joint top scorer alongside Tomlin.

A five-year Football League record low crowd of 3,536 watched the game but they were rewarded by an eventful clash that was not decided until Way's 85th-minute strike.

Manager Russell Slade made two changes to the team that lost 3-0 at Northampton on Saturday with the suspended Terrell Forbes replaced by Craig Alcock while Tomlin dropped out in favour of Andy Welsh.

Yeovil threatened inside the first two minutes when Paul Warne got away down the right but no one ran to the near post for his pull-back and the chance was gone.

Then loan signing Scott Rendell robbed Danny Woodards but Schofield just failed to reach his near post cross. Moments later Schofield shot over after good work from Craig Alcock and Warne. At the other end midfielder Michael O'Connor blasted straight at Asmir Begovic from the edge of the box.

Warne was continuing to defy his 35 years with a typically energetic display and he and Scott Rendell set up Welsh for a shooting opportunity on 35 minutes but the left winger fired well wide.

Centre half Gareth Owen was booked on his home debut for a foul on Clayton Donaldson before fellow defender Nathan Jones chose to take the attack into his own hands by driving forward before slicing his right-footed effort off target.

But Yeovil took the lead in first half stoppage time. Only seconds earlier had Crewe reorganised their defence after Julian Baudet went off injured. Woodards moved to centre half with John Brayford coming on at right-back.

And it was Brayford who Welsh bypassed to get to the left byline in the 46th minute. Schofield over-ran the cross but somehow managed to flick the ball up and then volley it into the roof of the net for a spectacularly unorthodox goal.

It was fair reward for the Glovers who had enjoyed the majority of the play in a performance not dissimilar to the one they had produced at Northampton but without the concession of a couple of goals.

After the break Crewe looked more lively with Northern Ireland international O'Connor more prominent. However, a long range strike that he pulled horribly wide and his collapse under a non-challenge from Schofield only prompted derision. Schofield was booked for his troubles.

Nevertheless, Yeovil were not bossing the play as they had in the first period until they doubled their advantage on 66 minutes.

Persistence from Rendell saw him supply the skilful Keiran Murtagh who exchanged one-twos with Schofield before the Yorkshireman pushed the ball out of his feet and curved a 20-yard shot out of the reach of former Yeovil keeper Steve Collis.

Crewe pulled one back on 73 minutes when Donaldson flicked a ball through for substitute Moore who showed pace and composure with his first touches to hold off Alcock and turn his shot past Begovic from close range.

And four minutes later another swift Crewe counter-attack saw Anthony Elding get away down the right and the unmarked Miller rammed the ball into the back of the net.

Tomlin replaced Welsh and within two minutes he made his mark with his cross for Way to net the winner.

In three minutes of added time there was still scope for the odd nervous moment in the home backline but Yeovil deserved their victory and the relief was tangible at the end.

Yeovil Town (4-4-2): Begovic; Alcock, Skiverton, Owen, Jones; Schofield, Murtagh, Way, Welsh (Tomlin 83); Warne, Rendell. Subs not used: Wagenaar, McCollin, Street, Brown.
