Bristol Rugby coach Hull won't get carried away after Coventry win

Monday, November 02, 2009, 07:00

Paul Hull says he will not be getting carried away with Bristol Rugby's eight-try Championship demolition of Coventry.

Bristol bounced back from their surprise defeat at Doncaster by thrashing Coventry 46-28 in front of the Sky Sports cameras at the Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

They still trail unbeaten league leaders Exeter by seven points – but head coach Hull was delighted with his side's response to the previous weekend's defeat.

However, he is determined not to get too excited by his side's latest victory.

"We were always going to put a lot of emphasis on this game after the loss at Doncaster," said Hull.

"We wanted to transfer some of the good work we've been doing in training on to the pitch – and that certainly showed during the first 40 minutes.

"We're a bit disappointed to have conceded three tries, though, because that takes the gloss off what was a very good performance.

"We have to keep on building – and we won't get carried away with this, but we know we're where we want to be after the Doncaster loss.

"That's the way we want to play. I'm really pleased with some aspects of our attack and set-piece – but there are still a few areas we've got to keep working at."

Hull would not be drawn on speculation linking him with a move for centre Sam Giddens from New Zealand side Hawke's Bay – but admitted he was monitoring the market for available players.

A serious injury to Ed Barnes has left Bristol Rugby short of options at fly-half and inside centre – and goal-kicker Giddens would provide a useful option in the No 12 shirt.

"We've got injuries and we're always looking to make sure our squad is fully complemented," said Hull.

"In the job I've got – and all directors of rugby and head coaches would say the same – you're constantly speaking to agents and players, and you're constantly looking.

"That hasn't changed since I've come into the job – it's an ongoing job and recruitment is part of that."
