Bristol Rovers squad looks the business after confident display
We were well worth our two-goal victory as players all over the pitch worked hard – surely a result of the competition for most positions.
And what better place to start than goalkeeper Mikkel Andersen, who I feel will quickly become a big Gas favourite. How good it is to have such an imposing 6ft 5in frame commanding the whole of his penalty area, coming rapidly for crosses and looking to throw it to a blue shirt.
Fans will probably have forgotten that Chris Lines' fantastic goal was the culmination of a sweeping move that started with a quick throw out by Andersen.
The only snag we have with Andersen is that if he is outstanding throughout his loan period it will place a bigger price tag on his head, or Reading won't want to sell him, so we should enjoy him while we can.
Our other new boy Mark Wright had a quiet but competent debut and provides competition for David Pipe.
It could be a while before Steve Elliott gets back in if Byron Anthony and Danny Coles shut out sides like they did on Saturday.
Jeff Hughes has frequently been criticised in this column but he turned in a man-of-the-match performance against the Lions and the determination he showed in winning the penalty typified his battling display. But he cannot afford to ease off because young Ben Swallow is waiting in the wings for another chance to impress.
Lines' memorable goal also capped a decent performance but he will also be aware that Dominic Blizzard again showed that he is capable of holding down a midfield position.
The main problem area is up front where Rickie Lambert is yet to be replaced. There must be money in the kitty from Lambo's sale to bring a quality striker in on loan.
Meanwhile, Darryl Duffy is struggling at the moment and Andy Williams is pushing him hard for a starting place next Saturday after his lively 20 minutes as substitute.
A Gashead next to me was clutching her new lucky charm in the shape of a little blue football "worry doll". But if we can keep turning in the sort of display we put on against Millwall then the doll will not be needed, or is it already having a positive influence?
