Bristol Rovers fan's view: Dickson's debut crowned a memorable week
It was a fantastic debut by Chris Dickson, who is just the type of player we have needed up front to complement Jo Kuffour.
Dickson showed at Brentford how strong and aggressive he can be, with the pace to frighten defenders, and it helped that it was Kuffour who got him to come to Rovers.
His goals were just what the doctor ordered to settle us down, along with Aaron Lescott's second of the season after a great move.
I was pleased how well Mikkel Andersen handled his biggest test since joining Rovers. Apart from his one moment of madness he coped very well with everything the Londoners threw at him, assisted very ably once again by Byron Anthony and Danny Coles.
Once Dickson joined Rovers it was inevitable that Andy Williams wasn't going to get a start up front. But just maybe there is a slot for a player of his pace and aggressive running out wide on the right?
It was significant that Rovers' reputation for producing goal-scorers in recent years helped Dickson come to the West Country.
No doubt Lennie Lawrence's links with Charlton also helped us to get the striker, but Paul Trollope's growing reputation as a manger must also have had a bearing.
His step up from being first-team coach will probably make no difference to the day-to-day running of the club, but I suspect it has meant some deserved extra wedge in Trolls' pay packet.
While Trollope has got an extended contract, I think it is important to note that we are fast losing that tag of "rag-bag Rovers". We now have a youth team again with an experienced coach in Darren Patterson, I cannot remember us having an assistant physio before as we now have in Steve Bissex, and Lee Southernwood is our fitness consultant. Yes, a fitness consultant.
I don't quite know what Alfie Biggs or Geoff Twentyman would have made of that, but it just shows how we are getting our act together. All we need now is that new stadium. While Dickson is our new striking hero, it is sad to see the demise of former favourite Junior Agogo ,who moved to Egyptian side Zamalek but because he was not paid for three months he has moved on to play for Limassol in Cyprus.
As a finely-tuned athlete I'm just off to see my fitness consultant before heading off to my grandson's birthday party and a big piece of pizza followed by a large portion of Black Forest gateau and birthday cake washed down by a bottle of fine red wine.
