Boss West left disappointed after Taunton Town lose to late goal

Monday, September 21, 2009, 07:00

Hungerford Town 2 Taunton Town 1: Taunton boss Paul West believes his side should have won this match in Division One South and West of the Zamaretto League.

"We should have been three goals up before they scored," said West.

However, the former FA Vase-winning captain had nothing but praise for his team's work-rate against Hungerford.

He said: "After last week's game against Merthyr they gave me 150 per cent. I was pleased with every one of them."

Nick McCootie, back after a three-match ban, made Hungerford pay for some sloppy defending by putting Taunton ahead from close range after 20 minutes.

Lewis Irish was unlucky not to make it 2-0 in the 65th minute when he lobbed against the crossbar.

However, Steve Cook, a former Taunton player, struck an equaliser in the 70th minute, his shot taking a wicked defection off Nick Pear.

Kevin Halliday then snapped up the winner for Hungerford – direct from a free-kick in the 81st minute.
