Stuart Campbell deserves his share of credit, says Paul Trollope

PAUL Trollope has hailed skipper Stuart Campbell as the unsung hero of Bristol Rovers' recent revival.

Though 15-goal leading marksman Rickie Lambert has been capturing the headlines because of his prolific scoring run, Trollope has made a point of praising the contribution from his captain, whose set-piece deliveries have led to seven of the Pirates' last 10 goals.

Campbell has also played a key role just in front of the back four during the seven-game unbeaten run that Rovers are looking to extend when they visit Leicester City – Campbell's former club – this weekend.

"Stuart started his career at Leicester, made quite an impact there as a youngster, and this game will be special for him," said Trollope.

"He's been in terrific form. He's one of those players who never really gets the headlines, but he's a very consistent performer every week.

"I singled him out for a bit of praise earlier this week because when you consistently play to the level he does, it sometimes gets overlooked.

"I told him what a tremendous job he's doing. His consistency and leadership is very good and he's making a very big contribution."

Rovers are in confident mood ahead of their first visit to the Walkers Stadium, where they will be joined by more than 2,500 travelling fans.

"It's a great game for us and the fact we are taking as many supporters as we are should make for a great atmosphere," said Trollope.

"But the main thing for us is to concentrate on maintaining our performance level rather than getting carried away with anything else.

"It will be a tough game and a challenge for us – but one I think we are ready for. If you could choose a time to go to play at Leicester City, then I think we'd have chosen now – we are in good form and we're confident of getting something."

While Rovers are on a roll after four wins in their last five games, Leicester's eight-game unbeaten run came to an end when they lost 3-2 to Brighton on Tuesday to make it four games without a victory.

"Lennie Lawrence saw them at Brighton and said they were cruising when they were 2-0 up, but Brighton staged an incredible recovery," said Trollope.

"Leicester will be smarting from that and they will want to bounce back with three points after slipping a couple of places in the league."

Rovers are expected to field the same side that started last weekend's 4-2 home win over Southend.

Although central defender Steve Elliott, who has been sidelined with a calf injury, will travel with the squad, he is not expected to be involved.
