Brislington girls are going national

Wednesday, May 06, 2009, 07:00

Bristol Girls League: Brislington Under-14s celebrated a notable success as they won the Tesco South West regional finals staged at BAWA Sports Ground.

They faced tough opposition in the shape of county cup winners from Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, Herefordshire and Somerset but remained undefeated and conceded just one goal.

Abbie Southway was selected by Tesco Ambassadors and Bristol Rovers defender Craig Hinton as player of the tournament, while team- mate Charlotte Reardon was picked out as best defender and Sonja Wootten won the best goalkeeper prize.

Brislington managers Mattie Osborne and Jim Whelan said they were "overjoyed" with the girls' performances and "thrilled" the team had picked up three out of the five individual awards, as well as the winners' trophies.

Brislington now advance to the English finals at The Walker's Stadium, Leicester, on May 17 in the hope that they can qualify to represent England in the UK finals against Ireland, Scotland and Wales at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton, a week later.

● Portishead Juniors Under-12s' unstoppable strike partnership of Annabelle Colston and Taylor Gainey led the way as their side secured their first league championship with a 6-1 victory over Thornbury Falcons.

Juniors took the lead with their first attack as Colston looped a shot from a tight angle over the Thornbury keeper before Gainey opened her account for the day with an effort from the edge of the box with the outside of her foot.

The commanding Eleanor Grey produced another captain's performance and, together with Cadie Dunn, gave little away in front of keeper Alice Pritchard.

Jennie Mistry and Maisie Kincaid were both creative and industrious in midfield and it was pressure from both which led to Portishead's third goal through Colston.

Thornbury pulled a goal back before half-time, but with Leanne Gainey adding energy to the Portishead midfield in the second half, and Erica Marshall and Abbie Taylor shackling Thornbury's playmaker Rebecca Lane well, it was left to Maisie Kincaid to score her 23rd league goal from midfield with a fine individual effort to increase Portishead's lead.

Two more from Taylor Gainey, to complete her hat-trick, ensured scenes of celebration among the home camp at the final whistle.

A depleted Wotton Rovers Under-12s side put in a fine performance to win 4-1 against a spirited Bristol Ladies Union C team.

Alice Baker hit a hat-trick, while Rosanna Blacker was also on target.

Amy Hardy hit a super hat-trick as Longwell Green Under-14s ended league champions Bristol Ladies Union's unbeaten run with a convincing 5-1 win.

Kelly Preston broke the deadlock, guiding in a Hardy cross, and two Hardy goals in quick succession put them in control.

Union refused to give up and their top scorer Jazz Williams reduced the arrears. But Katy Vernon's long-range strike extended Longwell's lead and Hardy completed her hat-trick.
