Support Bristol's St Peter's Hospice in your will

Wednesday, October 21, 2009, 07:00

Supporters of Bristol's only adult hospice are being encouraged to think about the charity in their wills.

More than 30 solicitors in the area have agreed to donate their time free of charge to draw up standard wills in return for a donation to St Peter's Hospice.

Usually there is a charge of £100 to £125 to draft a standard will but the charity has worked with solicitors to waive the fee this week.

St Peter's Hospice provides end of life care to more than 2,000 patients in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire every year but relies on fundraising and donations for its £5.5 million running costs.

The charity also provides bereavement and grief support for more than 6,000 family members and children free of charge every year.

Jo Gibbons, legacy fundraising manager for St Peter's Hospice said: "We all lead busy lives and often put off things like making a will as we always think we can do it at a later date, but keeping your will up to date is very important especially as any changes in your circumstances can influence how your estate would be dealt with, meaning that your wishes may not be carried out.

"Statistics show that 87 per cent of people in the UK die with a will but only 5 per cent leave a legacy to a charity so are we keen to encourage as many people as possible to think of us after they have made arrangements for loved ones.

"So if you have been putting off making a will or you know that yours is in need of an update, why not take this opportunity to put plans in place to protect your loved ones whilst helping to raise funds for your local hospice at the same time?"
