Former world champion Catley throws his weight behind the local amateurs
The city's former World Super Middleweight champion has joined the committee of Bristol Sporting Club, a group that helps fund the non-professional side of the sport in the region.
Catley, 37, was present at the Grand Thistle Hotel on Monday when the Western Counties Amateur Boxing Association beat the Royal Navy 5-3.
He said: "I fought for Western Counties when I was a teenager and they have asked me to come on board and I am only too happy to help amateur boxing.
"It was a great evening and very entertaining. All the bouts were well-matched and there was some good talent on show.
"I was glad it was back at the Thistle because that is where it always used to be."
Bristol Sporting Club chairman Trevor Benville-Scott said: "Glenn is putting a lot back into boxing, a bit like Joe Calzaghe is doing in Wales."
On Monday the club presented a cheque for £16,000 to the two divisions of the Western Counties – Gloucestershire and Wiltshire and Avon and Somerset.
The Counties were delighted with their 5-3 win, which featured victories for Daniel Ross, Luke Whane, Jamie Harrison, Michael Biggs and Stephen Hall.
The club, which is in its 43rd year, stages its next event on the evening of Monday, December 7 when the Western Counties ABA face a tough test against the Army at the Thistle.
