Hometown success for Bristol fighter Robins

Bristol's Martin Robins extended his unblemished professional record to five fights when out-pointing Matt Seawright in his home town at the weekend.

But show promoter Jane Couch was unhappy with the way the 26-year-old middleweight was treated by referee Rhys Carter during the six-round contest at the Marriott Hotel.

In charge of the fight, Robins appeared to lose his footing midway through fourth round and was forced to take a standing eight count.

"I don't know what the referee was doing," said former women's world champion Couch. "Martin just got in a tangle and was tripped, so to take an eight count was strange.

"It wasn't as though Matt put him down with a punch or anything like that."

The standing count made no material difference to the outcome, the Bristolian winning 59-57 on referee Carter's card.

But he was made to labour by Tamworth-based Seawright, who proved an awkward opponent.

Former Downend ABC star Robins finally found his range in the last two rounds, scoring regularly with the jab to move clear of his tiring opponent.

Home town favourite Rocky Chakir was less fortunate, losing out in a six-round middleweight scrap with Birmingham's Tony Randall.

Chakir held his own during the first half of the fight, but then tired and walked on to some crisp counters from the tall Midlander during the closing rounds.

His corner contested the verdict, but it was fair enough.

Torquay's Matt Wakeham, the latest recruit to Tex Woodward's Spaniorum Farm stable, extended his winning record to five with a points victory over Welsh journeyman Craig Dyer.

Couch has announced plans to stage another dinner show at the Marriott on December 19.
