Bristol boxers set for Devon clashes

Thursday, October 08, 2009, 07:00

Bristol light-welterweight Adam Cummings bids for his fourth consecutive victory when he tackles local prospect Ali Wyatt at the International Riviera Centre in Torquay on Saturday, October 24.

And it also marks an important stage in his ring development as this is his first eight-round clash.

Cummings, 30, has had to focus on increasing his stamina in readiness for the clash.

He said: "I've increased the roadwork to 30 miles a week and I'm spending an extra hour a day in the gym to get myself ready for the longer distance.

"Ali is a local lad so he will have the crowd behind him, so I'm getting ready for a real battle at Torquay.

"We never met as amateurs because we were always a division apart, but I know what he is capable of and will show him the respect he deserves.

Fellow Bristolian Dan Stewart also faces a Devon opponent in Jimmy Briggs in another ten-stone clash over six rounds.

At 21, Briggs is two years younger than Stewart, but the Barnstaple fighter has more professional rounds under his belt, although has only chalked up two wins in the paid ranks.

Stewart added: "We could face each other again at same stage in the future to fight for a Western Area title, so I'm expecting a tough encounter and won't underestimate him."
