Marvels of science from Disney's The Wonderful World Of Knowledge

Thursday, November 05, 2009, 07:00

From switching on a light to catching a plane, the wonders of science are all around us.

Today, you can pick up a coupon and go along to your nearest participating retailer to pick up our latest children's encyclopedia – Disney's The Wonderful World Of Knowledge: The Marvels of Science – for just £2.99.

Here are some of the fascinating facts which can be found in its pages:

There is no air in space so sound waves cannot travel – so there is no sound in outer space.

Hundreds of years ago, before the invention of clocks, people used candles to measure the passing of time.

Water can be used to split rock. When water freezes it expands or gets bigger. If the water is inside a rock, the expansion can be so strong that the rock will break.

Mercury is the only metal that is liquid at room temperature.

We asked 10-year-old Georgia Butt what she thought of the book, and she said: "I think this book is very interesting and fun to read because it's not in boring columns – it is fun. The most interesting thing I learnt was how shadows work."

Next week you can collect another book in the series, concentrating on insects and spiders.
