Chart the world with Disney's Wonderful World Of Knowledge

Thursday, October 29, 2009, 07:00

They can take you across the world without leaving your armchair and are a window to far-off places.

Maps have held our fascination for centuries – and now is your chance to experience their magic.

Today's the day to pick up a coupon in the paper and go along to your nearest participating retailer to pick up our latest children's encyclopedia – Disney's The Wonderful World Of Knowledge: Atlas of the World – for just £2.99.

Here are some amazing facts from the book.

Cave paintings in southern Algeria made 8,000 years ago show that the Sahara desert was once covered in grassland.

After the rainy season, Victoria Falls in southern Africa sends down enough water every minute to fill 265 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

In the winter, the seas around Antarctica freeze. This frozen extension doubles the size of the continent.

Mexico City was built on the site of an ancient lake. Although the lake has disappeared, some of the older buildings made using heavy materials have sunk into the soft soil below. Now many entrances are below street level.

We took a copy of the book to 11-year-old bookworm Amelia Baker, of Longwell Green.

She said: "I think the book is really good, and suitable for children my age and younger. You can learn about loads of other different countries.

"We have been on holiday before to Spain and America, and lots of different places. It would be good to have this book if you were going on holiday because you could look up the place you were going to in the book and see what is there.

"I like all the facts, there are bits about the history of some of the countries included. I like going to different countries and finding out about them. The book is good because there are facts mixed with funny pictures."

Next week you can collect another book in the series, this time concentrating on the marvels of science.
