You can see so much on a bike
THANKS very much for Mike White's informative and helpful article in Weekend on the excellent free local rides organised by the volunteer-run Bristol Cycling Campaign and by CTC Bristol. It really is great to see so many dedicated and generous "cycling citizens" sharing their knowledge of Bristol and routes around, and helping other people get out and have fun on their bikes. A few weeks ago I went on a wonderfully informative and revealing ride from the Bristol Cycling Campaign exploring Bristol's former cinemas. It is astonishing how many former cinemas there are dotted around, including one turned into flats in Brislington, the old Plaza opposite The Tobacco Factory (now an estate agent's and flats) and the Magnet at the start of the M32 within sight of the new Showcase de Luxe. You can see so much on a bicycle and learn about our city's fascinating social history.
Guided rides like this make things come alive and are great fun – the bicycle really is a superb way to explore Bristol. The Bristol Cycling Campaign are putting on their popular "Banksy Ride" this Sunday which will track down some well-known and less-known works from Bristol's enigmatic master of street art. It leaves from outside the Arnolfini at 10am, details are on www.bristolcyclingcampaign.org.uk /diary, and it's suitable for all levels including beginners. If the weather's OK, why not get out and ride? Who knows, perhaps Banksy himself might come along.
