In your garden, there’s definitely no better place to relax than on a garden bench. Where better can you sit back and enjoy all the hard work you’ve put into creating your outdoor sanctuary? Or spend a lazy Sunday morning with a cup of tea, the birds singing and the sun shining. And you simply can’t beat a good bench to create that all-important focal point that every garden needs.

Tucked in a quiet shady corner or pride of place on your patio, the garden bench is just so versatile. Just make sure that any bench you buy is specifically designed for outdoor use and that it has been built to withstand the worst of what Mother Nature can throw at it. In the UK we can get some pretty grim weather conditions, so it’s a good idea to invest in a quality garden bench that has been made from a corrosion-resistant material.

Teak, for example, is quite expensive but for a very good reason. It has been used around the world to construct outdoor furniture for many years, and it’s probably one of the most durable natural materials. It is incredibly attractive, pretty much maintenance-free as it has its own natural oils to protect it, and although expensive, it will last for many years to come.

If teak is not to your taste, then you might opt for rust proof and warp-resistant cast aluminium. Easy to clean and a light coat of car wax will eliminate ‘pitting’. And as you’d expect from such a versatile material, from contemporary to classical, there’s a vast array of metal garden benches on the market.

Wrought iron on the other hand will require a little more care and attention to keep it rust free but for many people it is the go-to material and has been since Victorian times. And the great thing about a metal bench is that rain will not affect it and they can be wiped dry in a moment, ready for entertaining guests when the sun reappears.

High quality metal garden furniture, made from iron and aluminium, will not warp or crack due to moisture in the air and will retain its good looks for many years to come.

Cedar has a natural timeless quality and if properly treated and cared for will resist splitting, rotting, or warping, it will maintain its natural beauty for many years with a regular protective stain or varnish applied. However, whilst wooden furniture may look attractive in outdoor locations, often it requires more care and attention than most people are willing to expend.

With a garden bench you really want a piece that can be safely left outside all year round without having to worry about deterioration due to inclement weather conditions.
