Another struggling team to play against, with no TV cameras present, meant the result was another poor away performance.

It was Rhys Evans who summed up the current situation when asked after the 1-0 defeat at Gillingham what he thought of Rovers' chances tomorrow night at Exeter.

He replied: "It depends which Rovers team turns up."

Gasheads must wonder what is going on. How can we destroy promotion-chasing Swindon 3-0 and turn in a battling performance to see off Charlton yet struggle so badly against a lot of poor sides?

From the start on Monday night you could tell that our boys were up for it, battling for every ball.

We have now gone five months without signing a permanent replacement for Rickie Lambert and Paul Heffernan demonstrated how vital it is to have a striker who can hold the ball up, bring others into play, and put it away once he has a sniff of goal.

What a difference in the way he took his chance against Charlton compared to the way Andy Williams dealt with his opportunity. Once Heffernan broke free his single-minded determination meant the defender on his back wasn't going to stop him and he finished brilliantly. Yet Williams, whose turn of pace created more time for himself with no defender on his back, dithered and the chance was gone. Let's hope he can learn from the experienced Irishman.

Surely it can't be the presence of the Sky cameras which made us raise our game? Saturday's blank sheet meant it is now seven games without an away goal. That is an alarming statistic.

Ok, I admit we were without four of our best players on Saturday and we nearly survived 90 minutes to get a point. But Gillingham must have been low in confidence, being in the bottom four.

We are not going anywhere now this season so it is a great opportunity to build for the next campaign by giving the youngsters more of a chance.

It was good to see Eliot Richards make his debut on Saturday while Charlie Reece got more experience under his belt. Maybe promising winger Ben Swallow will get a start tomorrow.
