Jack keeps cool to steer Barts to narrow victory

Jack Steer landed a late penalty to clinch Barton Hill a 13-12 win over Southmead in a full-blooded Charles Saunders Combination Cup clash at the Portway Rugby Development Centre.

The fly-half missed a straightforward kick at goal early on before putting his side in front with a 22-metre effort.

However, Southmead took the lead before the break with a try from a quickly-taken penalty, No 8 Gary Sposito crashing over.

A Rhys Davies try, converted by Danny Cottrell, stretched Southmead's lead to 12-3 before Barts rallied 10 minutes from time with a Sam Steer score, converted by brother Jack, who then had the final word.

Barts' reward is a home quarter-final against holders Clifton.

Quarter-final draw: Keynsham v Dings Crusaders, Barton Hill v Clifton, Cleve v Clevedon, Hornets v Avonmouth. Matches to be played on November 21.

● Prop Perry Bezer has taken over the captaincy of Gloucester Two side St Brendan's as lock Luke Hartley is resting a recurring neck injury.

● Johnny Howell, Tommy Edwards, Dan Beck and Nigel Moggridge were among the try scorers as Saracens 3rds eased to a comfortable win over Broad Plain.

It was the first time this season the club had fielded three senior teams, with the 2nds defeating North Bristol 6-3.

Unfortunately, the senior side lost their unbeaten Gloucester Premier redord, going down 26-15 at home to Matson.

● Two tries from Jamie Levan could not save an inexperienced Cotham Park 2nds from a 41-17 home reverse against Sully.

Tom Axley also touched down and added a conversion.

● Frampton Cotterell 2nds notched their first Merit Table win of the season, overcoming Chipping Sodbury 20-7 thanks to tries from Matt Jones and Steve Handy, with the boot of veteran fly-half Mike Weaver doing the rest.

Matt Lawrence marked his league debut for the first team with two penalties and the conversion of a penalty try as Frampton defeated Gloucester Old Boys 18-5 in Gloucester Premier. There was also an unconverted try from Alex Giles.

● Sam Halabi-Ahma's dramatic last-gasp try and Dave Priddy's conversion clinched Bishopston a 25-23 home win over leaders Bream in Gloucester One.

Winger James Oakley also touched down twice and Priddy – kicking in the absence of Jon Martin, who has broken a toe – finished with 10 points from the boot as Bish recorded their fifth straight victory.

● Imperial will be away to Avonvale in the second round of the Somerset Blackthorn Vase.

● Two tries from 17-year-old winger Connor Lambert and a Dean Weaver touchdown helped Whitehall to their second Gloucester Premier win of the season, downing Ross-on-Wye 17-7.

It was quite a day for Whitehall, who fielded four teams – the seconds and thirds defeating Thornbury and the fourths drawing with Frampton.
