Richard Peters out for revenge against his kid brother

Friday, September 25, 2009, 07:00

The Peters boys will do battle again tomorrow, with British junior international Richard still smarting from a rare defeat inflicted by younger brother Matt.

The pair are re-united along with Sean Hazell and Nathan Young in a Bristol & West AC Under-20s team for the Severn AC Cross Country Relays at Plock Court, in Gloucester.

For 19-year-old Richard the two-mile circuit is a quick chance to redeem himself after 17-year-old Matt posted a faster time than him at the Midland Counties Road Yelay Championships last weekend.

Despite the advantage of running the opening stage, Richard's time of 19mins 13secs was trumped by his little brother by three seconds to ensure a week of micky-taking from his Bristol team-mates.

"Matty is on a structured programme and has been training quite hard and has really improved, no doubt about that while Richard is still taking it steady after Achilles tendon problem so is not fully fit," said coach Mike Down.

"But I'm sure there will be a reaction from Richard and he looked better in training on Tuesday. I'm sure the defeat has stung him – I don't think he had a good night's sleep last week after that race and has definitely been getting some stick this week!

"Richard will bounce back though and the most important thing for him is that he is having no problems with his Achilles tendon now."

The women's team sees the return of Heidi North (ne Moulder) in her first race since becoming a mum earlier this year. She will be joined by Sian Davies, Nicola Brookland and Rebekah Randell.

Phil Wylie is aiming for a top-10 finish at the World Duathlon Championships, in America, this weekend.

The Bristol & West AC runner is with the Great Britain elite squad in Concord, North Carolina, for tomorrow's event, which comprises two 10k road runs sandwiched around a 40k bike races.

"I am absolutely going for a top-10 finish," said Wylie. "Last year I was 15th and I feel I have progressed to the next level in terms of fitness and experience since then.

"So making the top 10 is the next step and then I can build upon that over the next few years so that I am challenging for a place on the podium. That's the big aim and it is moving in the right direction."
