Pavey pleased to remain on the elite funding programme

Jo Pavey can look forward to the 2010 season with renewed vigour after UK Athletics confirmed she will remain on the World Class Performance Programme.

The Bristol & West AC international's place in the elite group of top British athletics ensures she will continue to receive funding from the National Lottery and full medical support, essential pre-requisites if she is to fulfil her ambition of running in the marathon at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

While Pavey's stature as Britain's second-best distance runner, behind Paula Radcliffe, has meant she has been on the lottery programme for some years, her decision to start a family meant that she did not race at all this summer and that left her wondering whether UKA would take the opportunity to cut her level of support.

"I am really grateful to UK Athletics for their continued support," said Pavey.

"The assistance from the National Lottery and UK Sport has been so important in my success as an athlete and the fact that they have kept me on, despite not racing this year, is tremendous news.

"I have talked about stepping up to the marathon and I'm thrilled that they are giving me their support in this venture and I am looking forward to racing again next year."

Pavey has started some very light jogging on a treadmill since giving birth to Jacob, with her plans having to be altered due to undergoing a caesarean.

"My return will be slower than if I had had a natural birth, but the main focus was always that Jacob is healthy and he is doing very well now," added Pavey.

"My comeback will be very gradual but I still think there is enough time for me to get fit for the London Marathon next year, as long as I don't suffer any problems."

UKA head coach Charles van Commenee said: "It gives me great pleasure to announce this year's funded athletes.

"To have such a strong set of athletes on the programme really pays testimony to the depth of talent we have within the UK.

"With these athletes available for international team selection, 2010 with World Indoors, European Team Championships and European Championships is certainly something to look forward to where we can build on the progress of 2009."
