Three men were arrested at a market in Filton in an operation targeting sellers of fake clothing and shoes.

Police and trading standards officers targeted those believed to be selling counterfeit gear as the market was being set up at Filton Recreation Centre.

They were joined by trademark representatives from the clothing industry and financial investigators, who were all involved in seizing hundreds of suspected fake items. Fake Nike trainers were among the items seized, as well as clothing bearing trademarks for brands such as Mackenzie, Henleys, Lyle and Scott, Timberland and Fred Perry.

A Mercedes van, allegedly linked to one of the targeted stalls, was also seized.

A house in Downend was searched and further items removed, including a quantity of counterfeit clothing.

Those arrested on Saturday, December 5, for offences under the Trade Marks Act 1994 were taken to Southmead police station for further questioning and later released on bail.

Neil Derrick, senior trading standards enforcement officer at South Gloucestershire Council, said: "We are very pleased with the results and grateful for the co-operation we received, in particular from the police."

Filton neighbourhood inspector Bob Evely said: "Many people think the manufacture and sale of counterfeit goods is a victimless crime, when it's not. We often find the proceeds are linked to organised crime, which has a direct negative impact on communities."

Sales of suspected counterfeit goods can be reported in confidence by calling Consumer Direct on 0845 404 0506.
