An apple for teacher was an appropriate gift for the launch of Bristol's second Trust school.

Monks Park School in Horfield has reopened as Orchard School Bristol.

It will be run by Trust In Learning, which includes representatives of Bristol City Council, the University of the West of England and City of Bristol College.

The involvement of these partners is intended to help the school build on its already improving results.

The new name was chosen because there used to be an orchard on the school site and because of its symbolism.

Head teacher Dr Helen Holman said: "An orchard symbolises growth for each student and the school's ambition to spread its roots widely in the community."

A key change will be the introduction of a broader curriculum, including practical as well as academic options.

Professor Ron Ritchie, Assistant Vice-Chancellor of UWE and chairman of Trust in Learning, said: "This is an extremely exciting time for the school and they can be sure that UWE is behind them.

"More students are opting to go to their local university and the links established with schools in this way helps to build student aspirations."

Judy Stradling, deputy principal of City of Bristol College, said: "The college is delighted to be supporting Orchard School at this time in its history, as it establishes itself as a centre for learning."
