Bristol Academy face trip to Chelsea

Thursday, October 29, 2009, 07:00

Mark Sampson is hoping Bristol Academy will take quick lessons on board when they visit Chelsea in the third round of the FA Premier League Cup on Sunday.

The London club won 4-0 in a league game at Almondsbury a couple of weeks ago, but Sampson believes his side are equipped to give a better account of themselves in the capital this weekend.

"It's a tough game but I believe we have improved since we played them in Bristol and can give them a much better game than last time," said Sampson.

"We are waiting for our Welsh contingent to return – they had a game last night so, hopefully, they will come back without any injuries.

"After the Chelsea game, we have three big league matches coming up – against Doncaster, Birmingham and Millwall in just over a week – so really this cup match is a bonus game.

"But we haven't reached the quarter-finals for a while so it would be nice to do it."

Keynsham Town take on the most illustrious opponents they have ever faced with a trip to holders and current Premier League champions Arsenal.

The Somerset club warmed up for what will be a daunting test with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace – the basement club's 10th defeat in a row.

Oldland Abbotonians took advantage of strugglers Poole Town's defensive problems as they chalked up a 5-0 win in the Premier Division of the SW Women's League.

Beth Dale scored a first-half hat-trick with Gemma Summers adding two after the break.

"It was a scrappy game and we didn't play all that well, but given the position we have been in we'll take the win," said Oldland's assistant boss Steve Lavis.

"It has opened up a bit of a gap between us and the bottom two clubs."

One of them – Bristol Ladies Union – are still in negative points at the foot of the table, and crashed to a 8-3 home defeat to Frome Town.

Downend Flyers made comfortable progress to the second round of the Bristol Soccerworld Cup with a 7-0 win over Cornish side Roche. Katie Michael's treble, two from Laura Baker and goals from Debbie Stacey and Sarah Dean ensured victory.

In Division I of the Gloucestershire County Women's League, Bristol & West went down 1-0 at home to leaders Forest of Dean, but Yate Town kept in touch with the top clubs by winning 3-0 at Newent.

There were big victories for a couple of Bristol clubs in Division II.

Leaders Bitton hammered Abbeymead 14-0 with half of the goals coming from Sharifa James, who now has 22 this season. Becky Jones (2), Becky Hurst (2), Nat Hole, Laura Tugwell and Nat Parfitt were also on target.

"We also hit the woodwork four times and missed some easy chances," said Bitton boss Steve Jones. "We totally dominated for the whole game."

AEK Boco remain a point adrift in second spot after a 6-3 win over Longlevens. Jess Rudge-Hamlin bagged a hat-trick with Jess Segsby (2) and Vicki Barlow also scoring.
