Train enthusiasts will be able to see a vintage locomotive next month as it steams into Bristol to bring Christmas shoppers to the city on a day trip from the south coast.

The Tangmere, which was built in 1947 and is named after a World War II airfield in Sussex, will haul the vintage carriages of The Bath and Bristol Christmas Express into the city on November 26.

It will arrive at Temple Meads at 12.35pm and stay until 4pm, stopping off at Bath on its way.

The Tangmere will also visit Bath again on December 5, bringing the Bath Christmas Market service from the Brighton area.

Passengers arrive in restored 1950s rail coaches, and can enjoy a four-course silver service meal at their seats as they travel.

The locomotive was built at Southern Railway's Brighton works, and during its life it worked out of London, Salisbury and finally Eastleigh.

It was withdrawn from service by British Railways in 1963, but was restored for main line running in 2003 and is now run by The Railway Touring Company and is often now seen at the head of the Venice Simplon Orient Express.
