Somerset cricketer Zander de Bruyn keen to home in on a Taunton semi
Zander de Bruyn wants to earn a home semi-final in the Clydesdale Bank 40 – and reward Somerset's loyal supporters in the process.
Somerset need to beat Glamorgan at Taunton in the final round of group matches today – or hope other results go their way – to earn another match at the County Ground on September 11.
De Bruyn hails from South Africa, where provincial sides are not followed in any great numbers.
Somerset can usually guarantee crowds of at least 5,000 for their one-day matches whatever day of the week they play on.
In turn, Somerset have been one of the best county sides in all competitions for the second season running.
They started the CB40 with eight wins out of eight, but a couple of recent stutters mean they might not have one of the two best records in the three groups come tonight.
"It is easy to say you deserve it, but we still have to do the business on the field," said de Bruyn, who scored 122 not out against Pakistan in Thursday's 50-over match at Taunton.
"We have been one of the best sides in terms of results so far, but we just need to win that last game.
"We have got one of the best crowds here. They always come to watch us and support us so well and we would love to win and have a home semi here."
De Bruyn has been named in the Highveld Lions' squad for the highly-lucrative Champions League in South Africa.
The tournament begins on Friday and Somerset director of cricket Brian Rose says a decision on whether the all-rounder heads home will be taken in the next 48 hours.
De Bruyn, who has one more year left on his current deal with the county, is contracted to Somerset for September, but they might decide to let him go early.
Senior players Marcus Trescothick, Murali Kartik, Alfonso Thomas and Ben Phillips will all return to the squad today.
But wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter has linked up with England for the Twenty20 matches against Pakistan.
Jos Buttler will take the gloves, and all-rounder Lewis Gregory could retain his place after taking 4-49 against the Pakistanis.
The teenager, from Plympton, said: "For me it was really exciting to make my debut for Somerset – the end result wasn't how we planned it, but the bowling side went really well.
"I just hope to keep pushing and stay in the team and hopefully succeed with the bat and ball in the future.
"It was good to test myself and bowl in the power-play at the end of the innings against some high quality players. It puts me in good stead for better things."
Buttler and leg-spinner Max Waller – two more players with bright futures – practised with the England squad in Cardiff yesterday, having impressed in one-day cricket for Somerset this season.
Perhaps tempting fate, Somerset have released ticket details for the possible home-semi-final early because it is just a week away.
