Children at Blagdon Primary School are celebrating after winning a national chess championship.

Two teams of four took part in the English Primary School's Chess Association Small Schools tournament, with talented players Zoe Strong, 11, Jordan Chave, 10, Ben Lee and Jonathan Lee, aged just six, taking the top place.

The students, who all play in the Somerset County Chess League, beat off competition from teams across the country to get a top score of 18 out of a possible 24 points.

They were presented with a special championship shield as well as individual salvers.

The students are all members of the school's chess club which meets after class on a Monday and Friday and is led by Zoe's dad, Chris.

Chris, aged 48, who has run the club for the last 10 years, said: "The students worked really hard and thoroughly deserve to have won.

"There were some very close games and they worked very hard and put in a lot of effort.

"This is my final year of teaching at the chess club and to finish on such a high note is fantastic."

The final took place at Pontins at Brean Sands.
